Ways to Manage Stress

Stress can have many negative effects towards our health. Not only can it affect how we interact with others, but it also weakens our immune system, causes skin breakouts, affects our mood and our appetite. Stress can also affect our heart health and hormone levels in our body. The effects of unmanaged stress can be quite serious. April is National Stress Awareness Month and if you haven’t already, it’s time to start thinking about ways to manage your stress.

1.     Acupuncture treatments

Studies have shown that acupuncture lowers stress hormones, like cortisol. Some studies also show that the “Zusanli” point below the knee can alleviate stress. Stress hormones, such as cortisol, are secreted by the hypothalamus and released to the blood stream. A study published in the Journal of Endocrinology found that acupuncture to the “Zusanli” point reduced chronic levels of the stress hormone.

2.     Massage

Massage therapy has been proven effective in promoting relaxation and reducing levels of stress. Studies show that massage improves mood, reduces muscle tension, reduces chronic pain and can lower blood pressure. While regular massage therapy can reduce chronic levels of stress, a single massage therapy session and reduce stress levels almost immediately.

3.     Walking

Taking a walk is a convenient and low impact way to reduce stress. Walking improves your mood, promotes heart health and decreases fatigue.

4.     Meditation

Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years, and produces a state of relaxation that is both calm and clear. Meditation allows you focus on the present, reflect on stressful situations and reduce negative emotions. Many different types of mediation exist including focusing on one’s breath, guided meditation and yoga.

5.     Deep breathing

Deep breaths increase blood flow, can reduce your heart rate, and has been proven to reduce stress hormone levels. Deep breathing is a simple and easy way to reduce stress, as it occurs in the moment.
